If you demand that meaning be universal before it can exist, then no meaning can possibly exist. In college he studied philosophy, particularly the branch known as Phenomenology, which concerns itself with the fact that life can be experienced but not really known. Sartre puts his own mark on this view by presenting consciousness as being transparent, i.e. having no 'inside', but rather as being a 'fleeing' towards the world. This is, of course, in stark contrast with many religious and philosophical theories, including those of materialists such as Karl Marx and John Calvin.
