In the sections below, I describe three conditions that a culture might move through concerning homohysteria: from the erasure of homosexuality, which negates the possibility of homohysteria occurring; to the mass recognition and dislike of homosexuality, which permits a culture of extreme homohysteria to exist; to the recognition of homosexuality without cultural homophobia, which extinguishes homohysteria. Men’s Gendered Behaviors in a Culture of Erasure Professor of American Studies, John Ibson (2002), thought he had hit the jackpot.

Sigmund Freud helped explain the creation of this “immoral” species (the homosexual). Fears emerged that an absent father (who was working in the factory) and an over-domineering mother (who was domesticated) could make kids homosexual. This created a moral panic among Victorian-thinking British and American cultures. It seemed that because industrialization pulled fathers away from their families for long periods of occupational labor, it had structurally created a social system designed to make boys gay.

While they continue to note that attributes of this archetype can change, they maintain that an essential component is that other masculinities will be hierarchically stratified in relation to it. Accordingly, hegemonic masculinity as a concept (which I call a theory because it has predictive power) is incapable of explaining empirical research that documents multiple masculinities of equal cultural value (Anderson 2005a; McCormack 2011a, 2014). This was not an issue in the early 1980s when Connell developed her work, or the 1990s when it was widely taken up in the literature—all of which occurred during a highly homophobic zeitgeist, where gay men faced extreme social marginalization.
