Tell them, "Don't worry about completing the run. " Many times, they will now make the run, because now they will believe that they only have to go another hundred yards. They will change their belief and their mind will tell the body to keep going up to the parking lot. After a week, or so, add more distance, and, before you know it, that soldier will be making the run with the unit. If you don't think your soldiers program themselves as to how far to run, the next time that you have them out on the morning run, run them a few blocks and then run them past the point you normally stop running.

What the Leader Must be, Know and Do As a leader you must be a person of strong and honorable character. Your visible behavior is an implication of your character. Your character describes, as a sum total, your individual inner strength and is a link Page 16 between your values and behavior. The leader with a strong character sees clearly what he wants and takes action to get it. Soldiers are attracted to leaders with strong character. On the other hand, leaders with weak character are not sure of what they want.

Nothing is more powerful in directing the force in human behavior than a belief. To change your behavior, you have to begin with your belief. This statement also holds true for your soldiers. For example, there were two staff sergeants in my platoon in West Germany who would show up late for work. I spoke with them regarding the importance of being on time, but the problem continued. I wrote up a counseling statement stating that if this problem was not resolved, I was going to submit paperwork recommending a summarized Article 15.
