Yet the public is hungry for thoughtful commentaries on the affairs of life and for guidance on how to deal with its problems. The response to In Love with Life showed me the magnitude of the need people experience for philosophical reflections on what they do and what befalls them. Meeting this need is a project of the greatest importance for philosophers. I continue to contribute to the effort as a writer and to promote it through the Centennial Committee of the American Philosophical Association, which I currently chair.

I discovered in graduate school that I was not easily led: I listened eagerly to whatever opinions were offered but retained the right to separate them into the potentially sound and the worthless or implausible. I read Dewey in those years and found him terminally boring. I was expecting philosophy to reveal the hidden structure of reality, but all I found in Dewey was a description of our well-known everyday situation. It took me twenty years to realize that probably there are no arcane facts, and even if there were, philosophy would be ill equipped to unearth them.
