Biology of the Mouse Histocompatibility-2 Complex: by Jan Klein (auth.)

By Jan Klein (auth.)

Somewhere I heard a narrative of a bridge and a painter. The bridge was once huge, immense and was once made all of steel, and the painter's activity was once to maintain it from rusting. He might commence at one finish and slowly continue, day-to-day, month via month, towards the opposite finish, portray the bridge. yet no faster may he end with the portray than the bridge could start to rust back. The rust, too, might commence at one finish and slowly continue towards the opposite finish, systematically destroying the painter's activity. And so the painter might go back to the place he had began, and start portray back, slowly continuing towards the opposite finish of the bridge, regularly only one step prior to the rust. And if the tale is correct, the painter could nonetheless be portray that bridge-a glossy Sisyphus! through the writing of this publication, the tale of the painter and his bridge stored coming to brain. the sphere the publication covers has been constructing so speedily that, just like the painter, I too needed to go back to the place I had begun and struggle the rust of obsolescence. yet in contrast to the painter, I had a time limit to fulfill, which constituted some extent of no go back. And so, sending off this manuscript, i've got no selection yet to monitor the end result of my undertaking be overtaken through the rust.

Basic Terms and Definitions Exposure of an organism or a cell to certain types of foreign substances (antigens) may lead to an immune response characterized by two properties, specificity and memory. Immunological specificity is the selective reactivity of a given immunological reagent (molecule or cell) with a group of related antigens; immunological memory is the ability of an immunological system to recall a previous experience with an antigen and to respond much faster and more powerfully to subsequent exposures to the same antigen.

The molecules react with anti-II- antisera and thus must be considered as belonging to the IgM class. However, in contrast to the pentameric (19S) IgM molecules found in the serum, the receptor molecules are in a monomeric (7-8S) form. The IgM monomers are shed from the cell surface and replaced by newly synthesized molecules at a slow but constant rate. The number of cell types distinguishable by their receptors has been estimated at 105 • This diversity is apparently sufficient to ensure that almost any antigen entering the blood stream will find a few cells with fitting receptors.
